8 ELECTRIC VEHICLE SERVICE QUESTIONS

2024 Jaguar I-PACE

At Jaguar North Austin Certified Pre-Owned & Service, we are proud to offer top-notch service for electric vehicle owners in Killeen and the neighboring communities. We are one of the top electric-vehicle service providers in the greater Round Rock area. As a result, our team gets many general questions about how these electric models work and the parts they rely on to operate properly. Below, we have listed eight common questions, along with our answers, to help you learn how to maintain your pre-owned electric vehicle for years to come.

1. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES NEED OIL?

If a vehicle runs on electricity only, it does not need oil changes. Why is that? Because it does not have a traditional gasoline-powered combustion engine. Oil is not necessary for an electric vehicle; its purpose is to lubricate the moving parts of an engine. If there is no engine to speak of—just an electric powertrain—there are no moving parts for the motor oil to lubricate.

Worth Noting: Hybrid vehicles run on an electric battery and a combustion engine and require regular oil changes, like a conventional gas-powered vehicle.

2. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE HORSEPOWER?

Yes, electric models have horsepower, although “horsepower” is not always the unit of measurement. Instead, some automakers measure the power of their electric vehicles in “kilowatts.” There is not much of a difference between the two. Using Google Search, search “kilowatt to horsepower.” You will find a converter at the top of the results page that tells you exactly how much horsepower an electric model produces if its power is measured in kilowatts.

3. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE A TRANSMISSION?

Yes, they do, but they do not need transmissions with multiple speeds, such as six-speed or eight-speed transmissions. Internal combustion engines need several gears with varying gear ratios to generate power. Electric motors produce the same torque over a specific RPM range. Generating torque via revving is not necessary with electric motors because electric vehicles produce power immediately. Precalculated gear ratios and full vehicle integration allow drivers in Austin and the surrounding areas to avoid shifting gears.

4. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE ALTERNATORS?

No, electric models, as well as hybrids, have a DC-to-DC converter. A DC-to-DC converter recharges the 12-volt battery using power from the battery pack.

5. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS?

No, electric vehicles do not need catalytic converters. Catalytic converters are necessary to remove the byproducts of internal combustion engines. Electric vehicles do not have these kinds of engines, though, so catalytic converters are not necessary.

6. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE EXHAUST SYSTEMS?

No, electric vehicles do not have exhaust pipes. Electric models do not produce any exhaust gases. Electric models do not burn gasoline for power, so there is no need for an exhaust system.

7. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE HEATERS OR AIR CONDITIONING?

Yes, electric vehicles have heat and air conditioning. By definition, electric vehicles rely on electricity stored in the batteries to run the heating and cooling systems. It is worth noting that the design/efficiency of those systems is important to the overall range of the vehicle.

8. DO ELECTRIC VEHICLES LAST LONGER THAN GAS VEHICLES?

Gas-powered vehicles have advantages; they may travel farther on a single fill-up, and it is easier for drivers to replace parts as they wear out. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, may last longer with fewer repairs. That is not to say that electric vehicles do not require regular maintenance. Even though routine service is required, the lack of moving parts in an electric model greatly extends its longevity during long commutes across Austin and long-distance adventures beyond Georgetown.
